According to a new study from the National Institutes of Health, women who frequently use chemical hair straighteners, or relaxers, faced a significantly higher risk of uterine and endometrial cancer.
The results were published October 17, 2022 after an 11-year study followed 33,497 women between the ages of 35 and 74.
Researchers found that among those using chemical hair straighteners or relaxers at least four times per year, the occurrence rate of uterine cancer rose nearly 2.5 times from 1.64% up to 4.05% of women.
They noted several chemicals in straighteners may contribute to the uterine cancer risk:
Unfortunately, manufacturers knew of prior studies showing their products may increase the risk of breast cancer or hormone-related cancers in women, and specifically uterine fibroids in African-American women. However, they kept marketing them.
Study leaders also found an unproportionate 60% of users were African American women, who also reported the most frequent use.
Lawyers have already begun filing lawsuits in federal court against the makers of chemical hair straighteners and relaxers on behalf of those diagnosed with cancer.
